 REGISTRATED MATCH

A club must be registered to hold an officially recognized Rimfire Benchrest Australia match. Match dates and starting time for matches must be sent to Rimfire Benchrest Australia in advance of first match date. Registration by RBA of a club's scheduled matches may be forfeited by that club if matches are not held in accordance with the Official Rules stated in this rule book.

MATCH REQUIREMENTS

A. 50 Meters

1 There must be a minimum of four competitors.

2 A club must have a minimum of four benches.

3 The commence fire command for the first relay can not be before 8:00am.

4 All competitors on each detail must be contesting the same class.

EQUIPMENT

The legality of any method, device, or equipment not addressed in these rules will be determined by Rimfire Benchrest Australia

A. Rifle

.22 Rimfire – Chambered for Short, Long, or Long Rifle.

B. Ammunition

Ammunition must be a lead projectile in .22 Rimfire short, long, or long rifle calibers and available for purchase at usual retail or mail order outlets. Competitors using hand loaded ammunition and/or ammunition produced with jacketed bullet, or ammunition not available from usual outlets will be disqualified.

C. Wind Flags

Wind flags can be utilized. Shooters must place wind flags in position before match begins. Wind flags cannot be moved or taken down until match is over. However, in Championship matches where bench rotation is in effect, flags may be moved between relays at the discretion of the Match Director.  If a flag is in a shooter's line of sight, the Match Director or referee will lay the flag on the ground. This must be done before commence fire. Any type of string line flag system is not allowed.

D. Rests

Rifle rest, either one or two piece must be on top of the bench but not attached to the bench.

E. Target

The Official Rimfire Benchrest Australia target purchased from Rimfire Benchrest Australia must be used. Targets are to be taken down by the target crew and given directly to scorer.

CLASSES

A. Unlimited

Unlimited scope power and weight. Firearm must sit entirely on bench and cannot be attached to the bench.

Rifle must be designed to be shoulder fired.

SCORING

A. Scoring Plug

The Myers 3X scoring plug or a .22 Caliber Rig scoring plug must be used at all matches and are the official Rimfire Benchrest scoring devices. The scoring plug is to be inserted so the glass is flat against the paper.

B. Scoring Protest

After targets are scored, targets must be hung for competitor review. Targets are not to be handled by competitors until match results are declared official by Match Director. After last relay's targets are hung up, Match Director must give competitors a minimum of ten minutes to file any scoring protests with the referees. If a competitor removes his target before the match results have been declared official by the Match Director, the competitor will be disqualified. A Match Director may impose a $2.00 scoring protest fee per bullet hole. A $2.00 protest fee is required at State, Regional, and National Championships.

C. Scoring Procedure

Each target block is worth ten points. The inner most ring counts ten points, the next ring out counts 9 points, and each succeeding ring counts one point less. If a bullet hole touches a line or X, shooter receives the highest point (Best edge scoring). The score (or points lost) is to be written in the block provided in the lower right hand corner of the target square. If a plug must be used, the letter (P) must be written in the block provided in upper right hand corner of the target square. If a shot is in the target box but misses the largest ring, the score is four (minus 6). If a target is not shot, the score is zero (minus 10). If more than one shot appears in target square, shooter receives lowest score minus one (1) point. Perfect score: 250 and 25X's. If the first shot on paper unintentionally hits a record target, shooter must notify Range Officer  before second shot is fired. Range Officer must check target before second shot is fired and make note on target and shooter will not be charged for that shot. Any shot touching target square's inside or outside border lines will be counted in that block. A plug is to be used if visible determination cannot be made by scorer. Any bullet hole that is between blocks shall be plugged. The block that contains the majority of the bullet hole will count for that block.

D. Ties

The Referees will check the targets starting with the #1 target block. First target block with higher points shot wins. If tie still exists after checking target blocks 1 through 25, go to #1 target block and check X's. The first one who gets an X and the other one does not match it wins. If tie still exists, go to #1 target block and the first X completely plugged out wins if not matched by other competitor.

E. Crossfire

If a shooter fires on another shooter's target and admits mistake to Referee, shooter who fires on another target will be given that shot minus one point. Shooters must notify Match Director at once if a crossfire occurs. Match Director will make note of the cross fire so that the shooter whose target was shot will not be penalized. If a shooter fires on another person's target and will not admit mistake, he may be disqualified.

DUTIES OF OFFICIALS

A.  Match Director

Person in charge of Match. Responsible for monitoring and timing each relay. The Match Director may assign the monitoring and timing duties to another person. Must sign and send in all possible National or State Record targets with match results within 30 days of match date to BA Head Scorer or target will be disqualified.

B. Referees

Three referees will be appointed by Match Director. Referee can not be scorer. Referees will decide problems in crossfire, protests in scoring, eligibility of guns and rests, and any other protests that may arise. Referees will decide outcome of any protests lodged by competitors before, during, and after match. An alternate referee should be named in case one of the three referees has filed a protest or is involved in a protest. Match Director cannot be a referee

C.  Scorer

Appointed by Match Director to score targets.  Scorer must have an approved scoring plug provided by the club. Match Director can also be scorer. All officials can compete in matches. Scorer cannot be referee.

PROTESTS

Any shooter may protest his target, someone else’s target, questionable guns or rests or other problems that may arise. Referees will decide all protest and their decision is final. The only protest a club can charge a fee for is a scoring protest

Benches

A. Drawing for Benches

Drawing for benches is required at all sanctioned matches. Shooters sharing rifles or equipment may use the same bench if more than one relay is held for each class. If pre-registration is utilized, the Match Director may assign benches in advance. If benches are assigned in advance, bench rotation is required and each competitor will shoot each class from a different bench.

B. Empty Benches

No one will occupy any unused bench at a match for any reason.

SPORTSMANSHIP

There will be no loud talk or noise on or around the firing line during a match. Match Director or referees may disqualify any person who disregards this rule. No person other than a shooter, match director, or referee will be allowed on the firing line while shooting is taking place. An exception may be granted by the Match Director to allow another shooter to help a new shooter in his first match. Shooters should not leave the benches after completing their target until the shooter on either side has completed all record shots.

SAFETY

Rifles must be equipped with trigger guards. All rifles must have bolts removed at all times except when shooting (Rifles without removable bolts must have actions open with a safety flag inserted). Rifles are NEVER to be on the bench until the Match Director calls the relay to the line after determining that the range is secure. When anyone is down range, NO RIFLES will be allowed on benches.

An alternative procedure at the Sanctioning clubs option is to allow rifles to remain on the bench when someone is down range with bolts removed (or safety flags inserted for rifles without removable bolts) and competitors behind and away the benches until the Match Director calls shooters to the line.

Loss of sanctioning may result if these procedures are not followed.

SECTION II

Match procedures

1. Match Director must post Rimfire Benchrest rules at all sanctioned matches. Match must start at predetermined time.

2. Match Director must appoint three referees before match begins. An alternate referee should be named in case one of the three referees has filed a protest or is involved in a protest. In order to rule on any protests filed by competitors and weigh winning rifles, referees must be present until match is declared official by Match Director.

 3. A match contests three targets. Competitors must place any wind flags in position before the match begins. Wind flags cannot be moved or taken down by competitors until after the last relay of the match has been contested.  However, in Championship matches where bench rotation is in effect, flags may be moved between relays at the discretion of the Match Director.  Any wind flags that are in a shooter's line of sight will be laid on the ground by the Match Director or referee. The protest by a competitor that a wind flag is in his/her line of sight must be made to the Match Director before the commence fire command.

4. After the targets are hung and the Match Director determines that the range is safe, the Match Director then calls the first relay to the line. Competitors in that relay will approach the line and place their rifles in their rests. When the match is ready to begin, the Match Director will then ask "is the firing line ready?"  If ready, Match Director will then give the following commands - (1)" Ready on the right?” (2) “Ready on the Left", (3) "The line is ready", (4) “Replace bolts" followed by approximately a five second delay, then (5) "Commence fire". The time for the match will begin with the "commence fire" command.

Under no circumstances will a shooter load a round into a rifle before the "commence fire" command is called.

If for any reason firing must be stopped, Match Director will call out 'Cease fire, unload rifles, Remove bolts, and step back from bench". When problem is corrected, Match Director will add two (2) minutes to the remaining time and give the command to resume fire. When time has expired, Match Director will call out "Cease fire, remove bolts, and remove rifles from bench". If someone fires after cease fire is called, that shooter may be disqualified. Match Director should call out 15 minute, 5 minute, 1 minute, and 30 second warnings. After Match Director determines the range is safe, target crew is to remove targets and hand targets to scorer.

6. If possible, scorer should start scoring targets as soon as the first relay is over. After targets are scored, Match Director must hang up all targets in full view of competitors.

7. A competitor can protest the scoring on his target or the scoring on another competitor's target. A $2 protest fee per bullet hole is required at all Championship matches. The protest fee is optional at regular matches. The protest fee is to be returned to the competitor if the referees rule in the protester's favor.

8. Only referees can remove and rescore protested targets. Targets must not be removed or handled by competitors until match results are declared official. If a competitor removes his target before results are declared official, he may be disqualified.

9. After targets from the last relay are hung up, a minimum of ten minutes must be allowed for scoring protests. Match Director will then declare the protest period over.

10. If a competitor has shot a possible Record target, it is the competitor's responsibility to see that the target or targets are signed by the Match Director and the three referees at the end of the match. Match Director must mail target, along with results of match, to the Rimfire Benchrest Australia within 30 days of match date. If this procedure is not followed, target will not be recognized as a record.

  SECTION III

Records

1. Records can only be shot at registered or Championship Matches.

2. Anyone wishing to claim a record will need to send their target(s) to the RBA Head Scorer to be ratified.

Any score shot will not be regarded as a record until after it has been ratified.
